Chelford Junior Cricket Festival
For the first time in three years the sun shone almost continuously and allowed the 26th Junior Cricket Festival to run its full course. The teams involved produced some classic matches, some a bit one-sided, others very close. By 6.30pm the youngsters from Cheadle Hulme and Prestbury had battled their way to the final. Prestbury batted first and knocked up a phenomenal 134 runs in their ten overs. Cheadle Hulme to their credit went for the runs but the task was just too much and Prestbury ran out comfortable winners.

Cubs Football at the double.
In the last two weeks the Chelford Cubs football squad has brought two trophies back to boost the Scout Group’s trophy cabinet. First a squad of six players won the District 5-a-side Tournament, beating off competition from 15 teams from across Macclesfield, Congleton, Wilmslow and surrounding villages.
After winning their group with an unbeaten record, the squad beat 24th Macclesfield and 1st Sutton in the quarter-final and semi-final respectively to set up the final against 1st Lindow. The final proved to be the boys’ toughest match of the tournament which ended in a 3 -3 draw at the final whistle.
After extra time the two teams could still not be separated so it went down to the dreaded penalty shoot out, which Chelford finally won to take the 5-a-side title.

A
week later and the full squad were back in league
action in a crunch match against 1st Sutton. As the
final match of the season, it was a simple
equation; if Chelford won the match they would take
the league title, but anything less and Sutton
would win the trophy. Sutton took the lead before
Chelford drew level just before half time, and the
second half proved to be equally as tight. Moving
into the last minute the scores were still locked
at 1 – 1 which meant that Sutton would win the
league, but then Chelford won a corner for what was
likely to be their last chance. The boys have never
been a team that gives up easily and that never say
die attitude was to be rewarded as the ball nestled
in the corner having been deflected off a Sutton
player’s legs - a slice of luck maybe, but
certainly one that was thoroughly deserved.
A great end to the season in which the boys played superbly, especially playing as a team rather than as a group of individual players and it was this togetherness and team ethic that proved to be the deciding success factor.
