Chelford Junior Cricket Festival

For the first time in three years the sun shone almost continuously and allowed the 26th Junior Cricket Festival to run its full course. The teams involved produced some classic matches, some a bit one-sided, others very close. By 6.30pm the youngsters from Cheadle Hulme and Prestbury had battled their way to the final. Prestbury batted first and knocked up a phenomenal 134 runs in their ten overs. Cheadle Hulme to their credit went for the runs but the task was just too much and Prestbury ran out comfortable winners.

Cubs Football at the double.

In the last two weeks the Chelford Cubs football squad has brought two trophies back to boost the Scout Group’s trophy cabinet. First a squad of six players won the District 5-a-side Tournament, beating off competition from 15 teams from across Macclesfield, Congleton, Wilmslow and surrounding villages.

After winning their group with an unbeaten record, the squad beat 24th Macclesfield and 1st Sutton in the quarter-final and semi-final respectively to set up the final against 1st Lindow. The final proved to be the boys’ toughest match of the tournament which ended in a 3 -3 draw at the final whistle.

After extra time the two teams could still not be separated so it went down to the dreaded penalty shoot out, which Chelford finally won to take the 5-a-side title.

A week later and the full squad were back in league action in a crunch match against 1st Sutton. As the final match of the season, it was a simple equation; if Chelford won the match they would take the league title, but anything less and Sutton would win the trophy. Sutton took the lead before Chelford drew level just before half time, and the second half proved to be equally as tight. Moving into the last minute the scores were still locked at 1 – 1 which meant that Sutton would win the league, but then Chelford won a corner for what was likely to be their last chance. The boys have never been a team that gives up easily and that never say die attitude was to be rewarded as the ball nestled in the corner having been deflected off a Sutton player’s legs - a slice of luck maybe, but certainly one that was thoroughly deserved.

A great end to the season in which the boys played superbly, especially playing as a team rather than as a group of individual players and it was this togetherness and team ethic that proved to be the deciding success factor.

The successful Chelford Cubs Football Squad celebrates winning the league and 5-a-side double!

Chelford Veterans’ Football Team - Update

Chelford Veterans Lose ‘The Derby' but recover in fine style with a victory against Poynton

19/09/2010 - Mobberley Veterans 4  Chelford Veterans 3

It was a second defeat in Division 2 of the Cheshire Veterans league for the black and whites as Mobberley were the 'visitors' (both teams play their home games at the same venue) for this encounter. The big issue was how to solve the problem of which changing rooms to use, who's job was it to put the nets up,etc, as it is extremely confusing playing an away game at your home venue! Do you approach it cautiously, as with a typical away league game, especially with the home crowd against you. Of course this mattered little as the partizan derby crowd seemed strangely muted, perhaps the occasion was too much for them, or perhaps it was because there was nobody there at all watching! I exaggerate slightly, there were a few hardy souls braving the rain.

Any road up, a cracking game all round and one which saw Chelford take the lead after a fine finish from Gresty, only to be hustled out of things by the crew from down the road. We found ourselves 4-1 down before pulling it back to 4-3 late on with goals from Kirkham (we' ll give you that one Rob) and a 25 inch drive from Heppell. Not really a fair result as Chelford played some good stuff but luck is not running our way so far this term.

10/10/2010 - Chelford Veterans 3 Poynton Veterans 2

Aha, the best opposition of the three played so far this term and of course you knew it was going to happen, Chelford's luck changed and a victory to celebrate. Of course, the vets played some good stuff, but Poynton came very organised, threatening at set pieces and plenty of 'confidence' (shall we call it) about their manner. However, they were soon knocked off their stride by a beligerent Chelford, who rode their luck slightly with a few missed chances, but also played some great stuff and just about deserved to win. Several superb performances, in fact a cracking team effort, and it is hard to single out individuals for praise when the whole squad played well. However, it is well worh mentioning Chris Davies on his debut shored up and organised a great defensive display, with Dave Douce brilliant along side him playing out of position again. Man of the match was Dave Edge the reluctant keeper who kept calm and confident in goal and pulled off two cracking saves low down and a spectacular tip over from a close range effort. Three fine goals, an exquisite lob from Kirkham after a lovely flick on from Heppell. A deflected shot from John Gresty who always chips in with goals at vital times. And a third goal from big Alan up front again playing out of position but psyched out the Poynton centre half with a clever piece of positioning to gratefully slot the third. We were three up before Poynton pulled a couple back and made it a close finish. Good strong refereeing again ensured a hard fought but fair encounter
