Chelford Veterans v Bexton Veterans 11/01/2009 - Match Report by Peter Evans

Chelford Vets 2, Bexton Veterans 0

Chelford made a good start to 2009 and the second half of the campaign with a hard fought 2-0 home victory over Bexton. This continues the magnificent record of never having lost a game this season when a match report has been filed with the Cheshire veterans league and the Chelford Village web site !! Not perhaps such a great achievement when you consider only three such reports have been sent in and this was the eighth league game !!

Nevertheless, a win’s a win and this one will hopefully spark a late run into the promotion reckoning. Certainly on this display Chelford looked much better than in recent performances with a solidity throughout the squad that had been lacking in previous games. From keeper King ( what a good stand in he is proving ) to the strikers there was much more purpose and determination to win throughout the side for the whole 90 minutes on a heavy pitch in wet and windy conditions.

Chances were at a premium although it was always an interesting encounter for anybody who bothered to turn out and support the team ( only two lads did so but if you asked them I am sure they would agree ). Anyway, after a slowish start Chelford started to apply some pressure with some fine midfield work from new boy Kemp and the midfield four started to ‘work the channels’ to quote Big Ron and get the strikers into some dangerous areas. On one occasion the offside trap was sprung and Kerr was unfortunate not to convert despite making contact with a desperate lunge. Meanwhile at the back the Chelford defence remained solid and limited Bexton to the odd long range effort that barely tested the keeper. Not that this was an uneven game, far from it, as Bexton played some fine football always looking to play where possible and had several spells of good possession throughout the encounter.

The second half saw the breakthrough as an inswinging corner caused confusion in the Bexton defence and in the ensuing scramble Gunn prodded home to put the home team one up. This disheartened Bexton for a while and Chelford had several breaks. With a little more composure on the ball and timing of runs, goals could have ensued. Despite this it was good to see Chelford taking a firm grip as the game wore on. However, Bexton braced themselves and began to gain more possession which started to panic the home side. This was not helped by Chelford now giving the ball away cheaply and this lack of composure resulted in a late rally from the visitors.

Fortunately Chelford’s defence held firm, where Lai had an impressive debut playing out of his favoured position. The home team always looked good on the break and this was confirmed in the dying moments when a neat exchange put the home side clear. The keeper saved twice but Gunn was again on hand to calmly slot home to settle matters.

A good game well refereed by Neil played in fine spirit by both teams. Bexton will be out for revenge in a fortnight’s time at Knutsford.

Chelford Junior Cricket Festival

For the first time in three years the sun shone almost continuously and allowed the 26th Junior Cricket Festival to run its full course. The teams involved produced some classic matches, some a bit one-sided, others very close. By 6.30pm the youngsters from Cheadle Hulme and Prestbury had battled their way to the final.  Prestbury batted first and knocked up a phenomenal 134 runs in their ten overs.  Cheadle Hulme to their credit went for the runs but the task was just too much and Prestbury ran out comfortable winners.
