Chelford win award in the Cheshire Best Kept Station competition

This year Cheshire is expected to attract an additional 300,000 visitors and it is important for those travelling by rail arrive at stations that are inviting and supplement the floral event they are visiting.

The awards were presented by Felicity Goodey CBE, the former BBC journalist and lifelong President of the Trustees of the Lowry in Manchester. She has also taken on the role of Chair of the Steering Group directing Cheshire's Year of Gardens 08.

Nine awards were presented, and the award for Tidiest Station went to Chelford. The photograph shows the volunteer trio, who, as mentioned above had no inkling that they were in the running, receiving the plaque from Felicity. The plaque will be displayed at the station in due course.

The Awards Evening for the 2007 Cheshire Best Kept Station Competition was hosted by the Salt Museum at Northwich on January 22nd. It is now five years since this competition was reactivated, and each year sees an increased number of entries, with the number of stations involved doubling this year, including Chelford station.

In 2007, Cheshire's Year of Gardens 08 have raised the profile of the event, and were the main sponsors of the award ceremony.
Wintry scenes around Chelford

From the sunrise blush across the sandpit, through the bright Winter blue skies over green belt farmland to the steel grey of a deep mid-Winter's Day. Shak and his new dog, Soot, see it all.

CHELFORD STATION VOLUNTEERS: WINNERS FOR THE 3RD YEAR RUNNING

Over 90 guests attended the Cheshire Best Kept Stations Awards Evening at the Salt Museum, Northwich on Tuesday 19th January 2010.

Helen Carey OBE DL, Chairman of the Cheshire Landscape Trust and Vice Chairman of Keep Britain Tidy presented the awards.

Chelford Railway Station won the ACoRP Award 2009.
ACoRP is the Association of Community Rail Partnership. Announcing the Award for Chelford Station, John Hulme, Organiser of Cheshire Best Kept Stations said:

"Community Rail Partnerships are a bridge between the railway and local communities. This award is given to the Cheshire Railway Station that best demonstrates this partnership".

"Although community work on the railway station only started three years ago, the judges have been amazed at how each year another part of the station moves forward". "This has come about through 4 village volunteers with help from their Parish Council, local business and the Crewe to Manchester Community Rail Partnership".

Chelford Station Volunteers Update April 2010

“Spring is here” or should that be “Is Spring here?” having seen the forecast for more snow!

Your intrepid volunteers were rudely awakened from their hibernation when our 2009 Award and Strimmer were stolen from the station in February, as reported earlier on the website. A really demoralising blow!

Our ever-supportive Parish Council, without any prompting, have offered to purchase us another strimmer—the last thing we expected! We are tremendously grateful for this very generous donation as it is intrinsic to our efforts. [We have found a new secure venue to keep it safe].

Northern Rail have put their hands in their pockets and have agreed to replace the Award, and we understand this will be with us shortly, when it will be encased before attachment to the wall alongside our other awards.

Trumpet Volunteerily

We urge you to visit the station this coming week to see our daffodils ‘trumpet’ the return of Spring. They are well on their way to maturity and in some cases the tulips have beaten them to it. With the Snowdrops still about, the Forsythia in full bloom, do come and look at the station show whether you are travelling or not! Only a couple of minutes walk from the Papershop and it will be well worth your effort! It’s the best tonic you can have after the long winter, and it’s free!

As with all our own gardens this winter, some of the shrubs look as though they have bitten the dust and we will try and replace these soon. The bunnies have been causing mayhem again, digging in the planters and eating things they aren’t supposed to like, but it’s been a hard winter for them too.

The saga of the appalling station steps continues and we hope to meet the Station Manager on site soon. After promising they would be repainted at Whitsun 2009, they finally received an undercoat 3 weeks ago. The operative said the somebody else would apply the topcoat. As you will see, the rust is already showing through the undercoat.

As always, many thanks to those of you who stop for a chat and to praise our efforts. There is no better encouragement, we can tell you! And we promise we won’t thrust a hoe into your hands!
