Chelford win award in the Cheshire Best Kept Station competition
This
year Cheshire is expected to attract an additional
300,000 visitors and it is important for those
travelling by rail arrive at stations that are
inviting and supplement the floral event they are
visiting.
The awards were presented by Felicity Goodey CBE, the former BBC journalist and lifelong President of the Trustees of the Lowry in Manchester. She has also taken on the role of Chair of the Steering Group directing Cheshire's Year of Gardens 08.
Nine awards were presented, and the award for Tidiest Station went to Chelford. The photograph shows the volunteer trio, who, as mentioned above had no inkling that they were in the running, receiving the plaque from Felicity. The plaque will be displayed at the station in due course.

The
Awards Evening for the 2007 Cheshire Best Kept
Station Competition was hosted by the Salt Museum
at Northwich on January 22nd. It is now five years
since this competition was reactivated, and each
year sees an increased number of entries, with the
number of stations involved doubling this year,
including Chelford station.
In 2007, Cheshire's Year of Gardens 08 have raised the profile of the event, and were the main sponsors of the award ceremony.

Chelford Station Volunteers Update:March 2011
Spring has sprung and the station gardens are finally waking up! At the station the birds are singing, the Forsythia has never looked better than this year and now the daffs, tulips and primulas are all coming into their own. If you are nearby this week call in and enjoy the spring flowers and scents. For the passengers [especially our commuters], we really hope that we’ve made your day that little bit more enjoyable with the best show of flowers on the Crewe to Manchester line [in all modesty!]. Be proud of Chelford station!
The big news is that at long last two more volunteers have joined us and they have made a huge difference to our efforts. A very big welcome and thank you to Kath Gildon and Helen Bilsborough. Last week [16th] we managed to work right across the front of the station and it certainly looks more cared for. Helen’s gardening knowledge will also be most helpful.
Two months later, we are still awaiting Northern Rail to attach our 2010 award to the wall along with the previous awards. We could have fixed it ourselves in minutes but have been instructed that everything must go through our station manager based in Wilmslow. Ironically his name is Waite!
As usual, many thanks to Chelford Parish Council for their unstinting support without which Chelford Station would look as uncared for and unloved as it did in May 2007 when the volunteers first started.
Don’t be shy, please say ‘Hello’ when you see us at and around the station--It makes our day!

Chelford Station Volunteers Update: January 2012
It’s hard to believe that in May we will have been tending Chelford Station for 5 whole years! When we look back to the neglected state that the unmanned, uncared for station was in, I’m sure we can be forgiven for being very proud of our achievement. Indeed we wouldn’t now be physically capable of some of the heavy physical work that we undertook back then!
The mild winter so far has left the gardens still with Marigolds and Primulas in evidence along with some of the bulbs already 3 or4 inches high! Roll on Spring and all the colour and scents it brings.
Modestly, we are very proud to announce that we have been presented with the Cheshire Best Kept Station Garden 2011 award for our efforts over the past year. We too think that our gardens have never looked better all the year round and they still have some colour as we write. In attaining this award for Chelford village many thanks go to Kath Gildon and Helen Bilsborough who have regularly given of their time when possible. Harry Norbury has willingly helped the old codgers with the heavier strimming in the ‘Gap’ and David Jackson has been on hand with his faithful Land Rover and trailer to shift the mass of autumn leaves and hedge cuttings. It‘s very much appreciated--’Thank you!’.
Chelford Parish Council has unwaveringly supported us throughout the years and we never forget that it is for Chelford Village that we undertook this project.
We have a new Station Manager Pam Williams who is based at Wilmslow but looks after many stations for Northern Rail. She is a breath of fresh air and very pro-active to volunteer groups. Pam has already sanctioned payment and permission for a water butt on each platform for us which we hope will greatly help in keeping the plants alive, having not had any access to water since we started. Andrew Norbury that stalwart of all the planters on the station will again be undertaking this project.
We say again and again to you; by all means stop and say ‘Hello’ if you see us at the station! Compliments are very welcome if you feel that way inclined and we promise not to get too bigheaded!
On a more serious note, we would gratefully accept some further assistance. It needn’t necessarily be regular but if you have some spare time and like gardening, you would be welcome, it’s enjoyable and you are putting something back into this lovely village we live in! Our phone numbers are attached.
