June
Tips
This is one of the best months of the year, everything in the garden is fresh and green and the Summer flowers are starting to bloom. At last we can plant out our Summer bedding plants. They need to be hardened off to help them acclimatize to the outside conditions and temperatures. Geraniums and fuchsia are ready to go outside now. If they are bushy plants you may be able to take some cuttings from them. Dahlias and begonias can be taken out of their growing pots and planted out, either in the garden, or in containers with other Summer flowering plants.
Chelsea flower show really gets you in the mood and there is still time to do the Chelsea Chop. This will help your plants to flower longer and better.

Helen's Gardening Tips for June

The
late Spring flowering shrubs need pruning and give
them some fertilizer to thank them for their good
show of flowers. Spring flowering clematis such as
montana and alpina can be pruned after flowering
has finished. Then when they start growing again,
tie in the new shoot to a trellis, or any frame
that they grow against.
Dead heading your roses and other plants all helps to keep them flowering longer.
Time to sow some seeds for next Spring: Wallflowers, Forget-me-nots, Sweet Williams and many more.
Tall border plants like delphiniums and phlox need to be supported to prevent them from falling over in the wind and heavy rain. Canes and pea sticks can be pushed into the soil next to the plants, then tied around them with soft garden twine. Alternatively, you can buy special wire hoops or make the plants noticed with an oberlisk .
Check lily bulbs now they have grown, for lily beetles. These bright red beetles make holes in the plants and lay egg under the leaves. Pick them off and destroy them. Also check your lilies for vine weevils which you can find on plants at night. The grubs of these insects eat the roots of the plants and can kill some big plants. They are often found in containers too.
Slug eggs can be found just under the soil. They are small translucent white balls. Either put them on top of the soil for the birds to eat or drop them in some salty water.
